Amanda Kleist’s view of education turned upside-down on a single night. Raised in the States and overseas in a wide range of school environments, she thought that she understood what options were possible for her children. A simple talk by a CC director, however, showing students reciting double-digit times tables, scientific classifications, Latin declensions and more, all from memory, showed her a world she hadn’t envisioned before. Now, after years of investing in the CC community and seeing her kids talk to her husband’s college students about laws of thermodynamics and the Middle Ages, she feels drawn to support the organization further and seek to extend its reach.
A project manager by training and an organizational analyst by nature, her degrees, business background, and volunteer work at church all have concentrated on making good systems run better. Recognizing that all she can do is plant and water—it’s God who makes things grow—she nonetheless believes that with His help she can empower directors and groups of parents to equip their children through classical education to know God and make Him known. Amanda is keen to share Classical Conversations with other parents so that the work of home-educating may be lightened by co-laboring and the joy of home-educating may be increased by the rejoicing with others in CC Communities, three-day practicums and in what ever other ways the Lord calls. Amanda is excited to come along side CC Directors to equip them in their role of enabling parents to lovingly and fruitfully educate their children.
Chrissy Kortenhoeven and John, her husband of thirteen years, became passionate about Classical Conversations the first year her family joined in 2009. As a former public school teacher for eight years, she immediately recognized that Classical Conversations was teaching children to learn any subject and to master the material, while equipping parents to successfully educate their children at any age and level. She knew this type of learning would have incredible benefits for students and their parents. She loved that Classical Conversations is to be done as a community, modeling a one-room schoolhouse approach, where everyone is learning the same material together. Chrissy and John also wanted their children to have a Christian education with a biblical world view and Classical Conversations‘ mission and model matched up perfectly, which is “to know God and make Him known” using the classical tools of learning. Chrissy has said, “I love that all subjects taught are interrelated to one another and all point back to God and His workmanship!” The Lord has blessed their family with friendships, intimate community life, and accountability, as all three of their children participate in Classical Conversations. For the last two years, Chrissy has also been an Essentials tutor in their new Classical Conversations community where they live.
Chrissy’s vision in Southern California is to reach the cities that have not yet heard about Classical Conversations. She wants to encourage others in their homeschooling journey and help equip parents who may direct CC communities, tutor CC students, and through this, teach their children. She says, “We are preparing the future generation to reason clearly, speak eloquently, calculate accurately, and write convincingly as they make God known to others.” Her goal is to bring honor to God as He develops CC communities and brings new families.
Erica and her husband Scott have been homeschooling their 3 children ages 7, 16 and 18 from the beginning. When their children began the high school years, they noticed an abyss in the way of real support, direction and community. The Challenge programs through Classical Conversations were what drew them to a CC Community. Erica has seen friends give up on homeschooling when they approach the high school years and yet she has seen what a blessing and help the Challenge programs and community are. For that reason, she is passionate about CC, because she sees it as the solution that so many families need! Her vision for her area is to help people feel secure in their choice to homeschool their children with all the fun and flexibility of homeschooling mixed with strong academics and accountability! Erica says, “As Christians, God has given us the body of Christ to help one another, by strengthening and supporting each other. As homeschoolers, likewise, we need the support and strength brought about by a community of like-minded people which is exactly what a CC community provides!” Her verse that sums up this perspective is, Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens Iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Because of the Bible's calling for parents to educate and raise up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, Jennifer Benson and her husband Eric felt a passion to educate their children at home. After reading books about different educational philosophies, she was drawn to the intentional academic approach to learning found in the classical model. Desiring to home school through high school, she saw a purposeful plan to educate her twin girls through the high school years with the Classical Conversations programs and so implemented the classical model from the beginning. She has since appreciated the support of having like-minded families to walk with through this journey. Committed to classical education and a biblical worldview, she is burdened by the desire to encourage other parents in this same goal. Jennifer is excited to have been called to lead North County in the Support Manager role.
In order to gain access to a Classical Conversations community, Jennifer stepped out in faith and directed her own community from the onset. She now desires to help grow the classical home school movement in Escondido, on the coast, and in the Rancho Bernardo and Poway areas by equipping other parents to lead new Classical Conversations communities as well. She believes the Lord has blessed parents with the role of educating their children and she desires to empower and encourage them in that role and to see the development of community-based support systems for homeschoolers found through Classical Conversations.
Jessica is a recent addition to the Classical Conversations family but has quickly caught the vision and developed a desire to share CC. It has hugely impacted her home education philosophy and experience. Since recently joining CC, Jessica has seen profound changes in the knowledge, understanding, maturity in the Lord, and joy of learning of her children. Finally, a complete program that gives us tools to raise the educational standard, equips the student to maximize their ability to learn, and empowers parents to implement it in such a way that does not exacerbate our children, but rather helps them to recognize the value in learning and striving for themselves. One Biblical Truth that has been powerful for her family this school year comes from Ecclesiastes 8:1, “A man’s knowledge makes his face shine and the sternness of his face is changed.” Jessica witnessed that change in her boys and is eager to share with others how knowledge and learning can build character when accomplished through the power of our Lord and for His glory.
Jessica is thrilled to serve in this new role as Support Manager, which has given her the tools to spread the word about CC throughout her community. It is her vision that Ventura County, CA will be known as a powerful community for “raising up children in the way they should go,” using CC as a tool that perfectly comes alongside the Word and encourages parents through supportive and inspiring relationships. Jessica would like to help build several new campuses in her area to serve K-12 homeschoolers looking for community, support, encouragement and a high educational standard.
Living in West Los Angeles, Karen and John desire to raise up their now three children to one day effectively influence and engage the culture for Christ. Karen considers it a privilege to come alongside parents who are looking for a better option towards the same goal. As a current Foundations director, a former CC tutor, a lifelong educator, and always a missionary at heart, Karen knows firsthand what God can do through a community commited to know Him and make Him known. Accountability, Best practice, and Community are the ABCs of Karen’s guide to successful homeschooling! She desires to make CC accessible to anyone looking for a community in the West LA neighborhoods and is preparing to develop new programs within her community and help launch new communities in Santa Monica, Culver City, and Westchester areas in the near future.
Karla and her husband of fifteen years have home educated their three children for the past eight years in five different states. The Navy has afforded this diverse exciting opportunity for their family. Their first experience with Classical Conversations was at a Parent Practicum in Sarasota Florida before moving back to Hawaii. When Classical Conversations expanded to Hawaii in 2011 they knew it was an answered prayer and they joined immediately! Continuing to educate herself on classical Christian education and Classical Conversations specifically, Karla began her CC journey as a Foundations substitute Tutor and then a Challenge-A Director. Additionally, Karla enthusiastically stepped up to lead the area as Hawaii's first local Support Manager in 2012 supporting leaders and the growing number of participating families reaching out to all who desired to learn more about Classical Conversations.
With the knowledge gained over the past two years and through God’s perfect planning, Karla now enters as the San Diego County and Hawaii Area Manager. Through her love of God, His people, her family, and Classical Conversations, Karla’s desire is to support local leadership as they lead families to Know God and to Make Him Known.
As a mother of several young children, Kathryn had a heart for classically approached homeschooling, but lacked the tools to implement it successfully at home. Being introduced to Classical Conversations four years ago was both an answer to prayer and a call to action. Inspired by a model of classical education that was infused with a biblical worldview; the George’s began their journey with CC and have cherished each experience. Impressed and blessed by how “doable” this method has been, it is Kathryn’s heart to encourage and inspire the moms of her community that they can do this too!
With the hope of discipling new and veteran homeschooling parents in the classical conversations mission, which is “The Know God and Make Him Know”, as a Support Manager to the beach communities and surrounding area in Los Angeles, Kathryn is committed to holding monthly information meetings, for groups and for individuals. It is her desire that the families in her area would come to know the joy of a weekly community group that offers a wonderful blend of accountability, encouragement and grace.
Lisa Burington and her magnificent husband Steve have homeschooled their two children from the beginning. Lisa recognized the value of the classical model of education for her family early on; Classical Conversations gave her the courage and the community to make it do-able. The Burington family embarked on their first Foundations cycle with a handful of friends and hasn’t looked back since.
Lisa has played many positions on the CC team including: Foundations Director, Foundations Tutor, Essentials Tutor and Challenge A Director. “The strength of a Classical Conversations community comes from a support team that acknowledges God as its CEO in earnest partnership with homeschool families. We purpose to redeem two generations of education with a Biblical worldview. Our members may not be perfect, but when we strive to honor God in all we do, He blesses the work of our hands in miraculous ways!”
Lisa prays that every family would have access to the kind of encouragement and Christian College prep education that a “CC” community offers. She is especially excited to support new homeschool families through this simple, wisely crafted roadmap. Lisa’s mission is to turn the hearts of the nations towards God: one child, one family, one community at a time. “With a heart for God, due diligence and tools honed through the Classical Conversations program,” she smiles, “ our families should have the confidence to engage with any body of knowledge. They should not feel excluded from any conversation.”
From the beginning, Nanette always knew she wanted to home educate her children. Although she lacked the confidence and “know how” to homeschool, she had a passionate zeal to raise her children as God’s future leaders. When her two oldest children were four and six years old, Nanette was introduced to Classical Conversations. The exciting yet academically challenging program offered her family exactly what their homeschool was lacking. Through Classical Conversations, Nanette’s entire family was revolutionized. Her four children ages 9, 7, 5 and 3 all love the classical approach to learning. Nanette and her husband, Rod have gained the tools and confidence needed to homeschool their children, all the way through High School. Now she is eager to share this program with other families seeking to raise well educated, godly children at home. She is excited to establish a team that is committed to helping other families home educate their children in excellence. She knows that, “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” Psalm 127:1
Nanette’s desire is to help other home educating parents gain the confidence, community and the tools needed to equip and train their children classically. She will be diligent in educating others about the Christian Classical model by holding information meetings, open houses & parent practicums. She is also committed to establishing several new Classical Conversations communities throughout the Antelope Valley. Nanette looks forward to sharing that passion with you. Email her to join her in this exciting endeavor!
Noelle's diverse background in education has given her experience with children from different cultures and countries. While teaching latch-key kids of South Central LA or the upper class of Mexico City's youth she developed a passion for education. Extensive research into differing approaches to schooling (and home-education in particular) convinced her that classical education was the way forward for her family but faced the enormous challenge of compiling a classical curriculum to input in her home. Her prayers were answered within a couple of years of homeschooling when Classical Conversations (CC) opened in Whittier. The Collins family jumped in and Noelle hasn't looked back, having tutored both Foundations (our morning program for 4 years to 6th grade) and Essentials (our afternoon program from 4th-6th) for her community and becoming fully engaged in the many activities that her CC group puts on outside of our one-day a week program.
Noelle has a passion for Classical Conversation's central mission of “knowing God and making Him known” and is eager to support the Community Directors as they expose children to a wealth of information and grow to gain the skills to make use of this growing body of knowledge in the Jr./Sr. high years through our Challenge programs. Appreciating the support of like-minded people, the academic intentionality and the plan in place for families with 4 year olds up through high school, she has seen the abundant blessings that Classical Conversations can bring and is excited to open up new communities in Fullerton, La Mirada, Buena Park and Hacienda Heights.
Classical Conversations provided Paola and her family a simple, doable approach to the seemingly complex method of classical Christian education. She began her homeschool journey feeling overwhelmed, not understanding how to incorporate God or inspire a true love of learning in her children. Through ClassicalConversations (CC) she has been blessed by a supportive local community and Godly CC leaders who have inspired and encouraged her. Although at first Paola did not know how to incorporate the Lord into their homeschool, God has granted her a deeper
understanding, knowledge, and wisdom of His great creation through CC.
She is passionate about bringing all subjects in submission to Christ and in awe of their
beautifully intricate interconnectedness. It is Paola's desire to make Classical Conversations accessible to more families within the local area. She would like to help develop at least three CC Communities for
the 2013-2014 school year. She will accomplish this by planning various Information Meetings and hosting a Monterey 3day Practicum. She wants others to experience God's glory through the integration ofsubjects. Witnessing His glory grows our love for Him and therefore our love for
learning more about Him. If we truly love Jesus, why wouldn't we want to know everything about Him?
Robin and her husband, Ron, have been homeschooling their two children for the last nine years and have been participating in Classical Conversations for the past five. Instilling a life-long love of learning in her children and promoting greater accountability for herself are just two of many reasons she believes in classical education.
Robin’s vision as a Support Manager for Santa Clarita is to encourage others on their homeschool journey. She is excited about the growth of Classical Conversations in her community which is motivating the launch of new campuses in the Fall of 2013. Robin hopes to inspire parents to homeschool through High School through the use of the inspiring Challenge programs.
Shari joined Classical Conversations 5 years ago and serves as a Foundations Director and Support Manager in the County of LA. She and her husband Phil are the parents of nine children, ages 16 to 2. Because they started homeschooling when their oldest was very young, they’ve been involved in the homeschooling movement for years. After running into educational challenges, such as dyslexia, with their children, they were propelled to find a method that worked for them. They were introduced to the classical model and were sold on the different points of the classical approach. Shari noted that many attempting to classically educate their children were coming upon the same struggle as she, that classically educating children on one’s own is difficult. Though skeptical at first, the Schwinds were greatly impressed with Classical Conversations. CC ended up allowing them to successfully classically home-school in a much easier manner. It also filled many gaps and added so much to their children’s education and was a fit even with their dyslexia struggles.
Because of her blessed experience, Shari enjoys sharing CC with other families. She has been amazing to watch the interest in CC expand and grow within her area. She desires to continue to assist other families in the way CC has helped her family achieve their educational goals beyond what they thought possible for their children. Her verse for this school year is 1 Peter 1:7, “With all diligence add to your faith virtue.”
When Susanna Hodge looks back at her first encounter with the classical model, she describes it as though it fulfills Proverbs 3:21-23, “My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.” Once Susanna learned that classical education existed, she knew there was no “letting it out of her sight” for her children in their educational path. When she was introduced to Classical Conversations in the summer of 2009, she knew that this was the answer from the Lord to her heart’s desire. Susanna and Ben began homeschooling their oldest of three daughters when she turned four and were blessed to implement CC’s Foundations program from the onset of their homeschooling journey. Though her degree in Writing/Literature from was supposed to prepare her for life after college, Susanna has said, “So many details found in the Foundations, Essentials and Challenge programs were lacking in my own education at a tier-one institution. I’m so thankful CC’s programs are designed to reach two generations at once, giving moms the opportunity to learn classically along with their children.”
As a leader for CC, Susanna’s goal is to “know God and to make Him known”. She desires to offer a CC community within a close distance to any and all families eager to gain this excellent education for their children. Contact Susanna if you’re interested in getting plugged into a CC community or possibly starting one of your own.
