Alison and her family have embraced a biblical worldview of home education with Classical Conversations. However, her homeschool path didn’t start out that way. Public school was not a desire for her family, and private school was not in their budget. So, she began teaching her 2 small girls the basics of reading and writing with a proven curriculum and lots of prayer. Two years later, a friend introduced her to CC and the classical model of education. Until then, the only ‘trivium’ she knew was the Trinity! Alison and her husband, Derek, continued on their investigation of the classical model by visiting a CC community campus. It was there that they saw the trivium richly unfolded; they knew this was the golden puzzle piece they were missing. This pairing has given her the confidence and support to provide her children an academically rich curriculum that continually reveals God’s truth, goodness and beauty. According to Alison, “for some families, the homeschool opportunity seems too overwhelming or perhaps not obtainable. But, Romans 8 tells us that if He has called us, He will equip us, and it will be for His glory!” For Alison and Derek, this chosen path of education is preparing them and their children to live confidently for Christ in whatever the future has for them.
In her role as Support Manager, Alison is eager to stand shoulder to shoulder with other parents through their homeschooling journey. Planting seeds of growth for Classical Conversations while encouraging parents and children in the Durham and surrounding areas will be her focus. In this process she will be hosting information meetings and also be praying for leadership to rise up in these areas. Community directors who are willing to organize and lead others with a passion for a classical style of home education will enable these communities to healthfully thrive and ultimately glorify.
Bonnie Pechar has a passion for helping parents homeschool their children through high school. She believes that homeschooling allows parents to not only give their children the best education possible, but also to disciple their children and develop relationships with their children that will last through their teenage years. She has found that Classical Conversations is ideal for equipping parents through local communities that offer support, encouragement, and accountability.
Bonnie’s desire is to offer Classical Conversations communities throughout the Lake Norman Area, Gastonia, Hickory and Statesville.
Before Classical Conversations, Camilla taught her two beautiful and bright children at home in the manner she had been taught by the public education system. It was all she knew. Workbooks and achievement tests left her feeling uninspired and directionless. Without being rigid, CC provides her with a structured base, classically taught curriculum that has a continuous thread through each level of learning. She is never left wandering what comes next or how long can I do this. Since joining a thriving CC community, she has been surrounded with the curriculum, support, and grace she needed to not just get her kids to the finish line, but propel them beyond it with a lifetime love of learning. “Classical Conversations has revolutionized home education for me.” As an added bonus, CC has enlightened and broadened her total concept of a biblical world view.
Through the support of Camilla’s loving husband, director, and the caring families in her community, her passion for Classical Conversations has been ignited to encourage and support other home educators and even would be home educators, by sharing the tools and support she’s so graciously been given. As a Support Manager for CC, it is her vision to walk alongside other families in the southeast location of Wake County instilling confidence in them and equipping them to carry the same vision.
Candice Millard is passionate about Classical Conversations because of how empowering it can be for parents who are fearful of homeschooling through high school. CC communities not only succeed in making the tools available for educating children in the classical model, they also provides the encouragement most families are lacking in this journey. After she and her husband witnessed first hand the positive change that homeschooling and CC provided for their own family, Candice was determined to share this opportunity with others so that they could reap the rewards of being part of this wonderful community. She believes CC is helping her not only educate her two wonderful children academically, but most importantly spiritually, as each subject is taught with Christ as the center. As a Support Manager, Candice not only desires to support her current communities but to see exponential growth of new communities as well, so that others can enjoy all that CC has to offer.
With a daughter in college who was home schooled from infancy, Crystal appreciates the academic framework and community of support provided by Classical Conversations and a local community. Although she did not “discover” CC for herself until 2010, she recognized immediately that it offered her family the tools and resources to home educate her two younger daughters confidently through high school. Classical Conversations’ Christ-centered program also helps preserve and cultivate the principles and relationships they value as a family.
As she adjusts to this new season of life as an “older” homeschooling mom, Crystal hopes to encourage and equip other parents who have a desire to home educate their children, particularly those choosing a classical education. Establishing CC programs in the beautiful far western communities of NC, including Andrews, Franklin, and Waynesville is a priority for her. She believes that families in these mountain regions, where educational options can be limited, should have access to a quality, college-prep education. Her greatest desire is not only to help families home educate their children in superior academics, but to help them come to “Know God and to Make Him Known.”
Donna and her husband Gary have three children and have been a homeschooling family for over 15 years. They have graduated and sent their firstborn to college. The idea of a home centered education took root in them before he was school age and they have been committed to homeschooling ever since. Classical Conversations came to the Raleigh area in 2003 and the Walker family has been a part of it right from the beginning. “The support and encouragement our family receives each week in our CC Community has been such a blessing each and every year!” Donna has tutored Foundations, currently directs Challenge A, speaks and trains at area Parent Practicums, and is the Support Manager for the Southeast Triangle. Her passion is to encourage families not to miss out on the joys of learning together and develop a life-long love of learning. She delights in sharing with others how Classical Conversations equips parents to flesh out the time-tested classical, Christian model of education and to encourage them along the way.
What started out as one CC Community in Raleigh has blossomed to over 15 throughout the Triangle area, with more growth underway! Donna currently supports directors and families in the southeast Triangle and is always on the lookout for those she can assist to start a community in their neighborhood and to train parent-tutors who can model the classical tools of learning. Her vision is for every student to have the opportunity of knowing God and making Him known through learning about His world in everything they study by giving every student the opportunity to become a part of a nearby Classical Conversations community in Wake and Johnson Counties, including Youngsville, Wendell, Knightdale, Smithfield and Benson.
Justin and his wife Crystal are immensely grateful to God for how Classical Conversations has blessed their family, especially in helping them homeschool their two sons in a God-centered, classical way. Justin desires to help more and more families catch the vision of CC so that more students can benefit. His passion is to see students grow to be radically committed to Christ and ably equipped to change the world.
Being a Suppot Manager for CC, Justin plans to raise up leaders in the Greenville and Rockey Mount area. It is his vision to spread the word about CC to help equip other families as they continue along their homeschool journey.
Classical Conversations has been the central part of the homeschool experience for Kelli Strickland and her three children for ten years, and the journey becomes more enjoyable every year. As she has grown in understanding of the classical model and seen the common sense approach to the Classical Conversations organization, it has become her passion to share this opportunity of learning to think about things with the families she meets. In the world that Christians live and lead in, it is imperative that parents walk beside their children and teach them to think, and not just accept the deluge of conflicting information with which they are bombarded, as they seek to know God and make Him known.
As the Classical Conversations communities in her areas increase in upper level programs, it is Kelli’s desire to encourage parents to stay involved in the higher education of their students. It is in the teen years that parents have vital and necessary opportunity to help develop thinking skills that will guide them as they glorify God throughout their adult lives. Kelli’s vision is that the partnership of Classical Conversations will provide every parent the support needed to complete the homeschool journey through high school.
KimberLee joined CC in 2011 and delights in the knowledge that CC has encouraged and also that CC and her community helps shapes her daughter’s love for Jesus Christ and their desire as a family to share Him and His love with those around them.
KimberLee believes that CC is a key for providing academic excellence and can be used as a tool to equip children to be light in any environment as she endeavors to continue the grassroots movement by planting new communities and empowering parents with tools needed to teach their children. KimberLee supports the Winston-Salem, Kernersville and Yadkinville areas.
Being called to homeschooling while her children were being educated in the highest ranked elementary school in her county, Nicki Bailey felt overwhelmed and unequipped. While she knew her children were getting what the state of North Carolina thought was a good education, Nicki and her husband Eddie also knew that Christian values and a biblical world view were never going to be a part of a school day. As she was beginning to research the multitude of curriculum options, a friend explained to Nicki the classical model of learning and about Classical Conversations. She quickly learned that their homeschooling vision for their four children: a focus on Christ, encouragement of community, and a competitive education were all encompassed in Classical Conversations. Through CC, the Bailey family is now equipped, encouraged, and empowered to give their children, an excellent education through which they can confidently defend the Christian faith to the glory of God.
Nicki's vision is to expand Classical Conversations to all western North Carolina families who desire to homeschool classically with a biblical worldview through high school. She hopes to show parents how CC can remove the burden of the what and the how of homeschooling all of their children, regardless of their grade or challenges they may have. Committed to leading with excellence, Nicki plans on holding information meetings in Gaston, Cleveland and surrounding counties in early 2014, culminating with a parent practicum in the late spring. She hopes to give everyone who has a heart for homeschool a chance to learn about the amazing Christian education that Classical Conversations can help parents provide their children.
