The only supplementation we do outside of Math and Language Arts is reading books. I research our topics on the library's website and request what I think the kids will like. They pick through them and read them with me or on their own. If you focus on the memory work, they will be prepared by the time they get to Essentials. This is our first year in Essentials.

I have been doing foundations since the beginning with both my kids and I am a foundations tutor. Both my kids are in foundations. My son is in his second tour Essentials and my daughter is in her first year of Essentials. We have done exactly those curriculum you mentioned. The only one extra was first language lessons from Jesse Wise, which was helpful for essentials in some ways but not at all necessary. They have been fine in Essentials and I know families like me who have taken a simple approach and trusted the CC model. You don't need all that extra stuff.

My wife and I are doing our research before we have children to make sure we are good teachers for our children. We are reading The Core and will read The Question, next. This thread has been extraordinarily helpful. Even after reading the book, I could have made things more complicated than it needed to be. Now, I know that the best way to do this is to trust the model, keep it simple and fun. What a great thread!!!

Absolutely, keeping it simple is really the best in my opinion. Making sure there is joy in it when they are younger, is far more important. When their brains are ready for more is when they make that transition into Challenge and Essentials. Both of those programs introduce the information well and do not really require a student to prepare for them.

I have used Math-U-See for years. We are in Trig now. I really like it, but am thinking of moving into a different program next year. Saxon is awesome. We supplemented with Saxon this year.
