After homeschooling two boys for 13 years from a biblical perspective somewhat classically, Anita and her husband found that their youngest son’s personality and learning style craved another outlet. After much prayer and an information meeting, Anita considered Classical Conversations, which was new in town. The CC motto “To Know God and Make Him known” resonated with her as did the idea of a classical Christian community coming along side parents equipping them in the home school process, and encouraging students to excel. The ladies making the presentations impressed her with their love for the Lord and their personal experience in CC. With its emphasis on preparation, participation, and presentation CC seemed like God’s answer for their family.
Three years later, after participating in Essentials and Challenge A, and directing a Challenge B class, Anita knows that CC is an answer to more than one prayer. For decades she prepared and believed God wanted her to help reform education in a way that would glorify Him; to encourage others to yield their heart and mind to know, understand, and walk in God’s wisdom (Prov. 2:6; Prov. 24:3-4); and to place His word as the central guide for every area of life. Being in CC gives Anita this opportunity for she sees CC’s practical discipleship method and classical model changing families; reforming education and communities for the better. Anita is proud to be a small part of God’s work to impact and transform families for His glory here in Virginia.
The Hobcrofts’ lives were forever, eternally, changed when they submitted their lives to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Just months later, God had placed upon them a conviction and calling to homeschool. Pulling their fourth son out of public school, the Hobcrofts began homeschooling their (at that time) youngest son. It was not long before God created a passion in Barby’s heart to help counsel families considering homeschooling and to encourage moms who were doubting themselves.
Ten years into their homeschool journey, with her fourth son starting his senior year and her fifth son starting first grade, Barby was reflecting on what had worked well and what she would have liked to do differently. As much as she loved her homeschool experience, there was something more she wanted for her final child. Barby wanted to finish well.
The Hobcrofts’ lives have been, once again, changed forever because of Classical Conversations. It has been everything Barby had wanted for her children and more than she could have ever hoped for. Her newest mission and passion is to talk to as many people as possible about Classical Conversations.
Cathy Lyon is passionate about home education. Early on as she explored educational options for her children, she was blessed by homeschooling moms that took an interest in mentoring her and her family. As a result, those types of relationships became her passion for other moms. She is driven by a desire to mentor and educate other moms and families as they explore and enter in to home education for their families. Classical Conversations has become the vehicle for her to be engaged in such relationships.
Cathy's long term vision for Classical Conversations is that it become synonymous with classical home education. She sees successful, accessible communities, marketing, and positive word of mouth as key ways for Classical Conversations to be a recognized name for home educators across not only her current region, but across the country. Believing in the positive effects of home educating and Classical Conversations communities, she strives to communicate the corporate vision as well as reach as many families as possible to ensure that CC becomes a household name.
Jennifer Truesdale and her husband Steve began their family and soon developed a desire to home educate their children. They felt a need to protect their growing family from worldly influences at public schools and to strive for a better education than they, themselves, had received. As their family grew it became more difficult to keep up with all of the educational needs being placed on her shoulders. A friend mentioned Classical Conversations and they began researching. The program provided just the fellowship, accountability and structure that was missing in their schooling. She wanted all other homeschoolers to know about this wonderful home schooling option.
Now as a Support Manager for Classical Conversations, Jennifer would like to help other struggling homeschooling families feel equipped to finish well on their educational journey. She plans to begin by letting families know of their educational options through holding information meetings in a variety of settings. She wants to help establish as many Classical Conversations programs as necessary in order to fulfill the needs of her local community.
After homeschooling their older children for ten years (and graduating two!), Kathy and her husband came to a point where they felt something was missing. After much prayer and seeking out advice, Kathy found that “missing piece” when a friend gave her a Classical Conversations catalog. Kathy has now been the Foundations and Essentials Director of the Woodbridge, VA community since 2007 and there are no doubts that they made the right choice. “The Foundations, Essentials and Challenge programs have provided the support and accountability necessary to successfully homeschool from Pre-K through high school. Partnering with tutors in the early years to lay the foundation and then in Challenge with biblical worldview discussions has reinforced our teachings at home. “
As Classical Conversations continues to grow in Prince William County, Kathy is excited to be a part of it and share the vision of CC with area families. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the community and look forward to seeing how God will use this generation of children being home educated through Classical Conversations.”
After homeschooling for many years, Niki Bennett felt something was missing in their family’s homeschooling journey. Upon her introduction to Classical Conversations, she felt complete and knew the Lord had opened a door to bless and encourage their homeschooling journey. She loves learning with her 2 kids, ages 11 and 5, and strives for her kids to know the Lord and to make Him known throughout their days. As a Support Manager for portions of Prince William County, Niki eagerly shares the mission and value of Classical Conversations with other homeschooling families to help empower our children to make a pivotal difference in our world. She joyfully awaits all that the Lord has for our CC communities during the 2013 year.
Having been one of the pioneers in homeschooling classically in the early 80s, Patsy is thrilled to see the tradition continuing as her 3 grandchildren are being homeschooled through Classical Conversations and laments it was not available for her own past homeschooling needs. Using the time-tested methods of learning which have produced the most literate societies and the greatest minds over the last few thousand years in her own teaching, she has a vision for the expansion of this program that would make this wonderful experience easily accessible to everyone in the Tidewater, VA area.
Unlike homeschooling 3 decades ago, when there was little support or encouragement, today, Classical Conversations offers guidance and the structure of a well-planned curriculum from age 4 through high school, with mentoring, modeling, and accountability, providing a classical framework with a solid Biblical worldview. She is excited to help grow the Classical Conversations program because the more the program spreads, the more parents will feel empowered to pass on the classical tools of learning to the next generation.
What was the one-room schoolhouse like and why was it successful even though there were multi-aged children attending it? These questions brought Aaron and Regina Roberts to investigate the classical model of education. Regina tried to implement this wonderful method but only when a long-time friend introduced Regina to Classical Conversations, did she realize how to make it work. That was the summer of 2007 and the Roberts Family has been hooked ever since!
Aaron and Regina’s passion is Philippians 3:10, “That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection.” After choosing this verse as their family’s motto and mission they realized it is mirrored in the motto and mission of Classical Conversations---“To know God, and to make Him known.” No matter where the Roberts family goes their passion is to tell and help others find the true knowledge, understanding, and wisdom of “the whole matter” while they continue learning too that Solomon’s words ring loud and clear “the whole duty of man is to fear (know) God and keep His commandments.” Matthew 28:19, “Go and teach!”
I, Regina Roberts, am here to serve you. Now in my 11th year of this homeschool journey, I pray and work that I may serve you better each day. “Ora et Labora!”
Sandy began her journey with CC in 2008 when an opportunity to help start a new community arose. While tutoring a Foundations class and leading her two youngest children through Challenges A and I the integration of the program and its stellar academics was brought to light. Helping with a Parent Practicum peeled back another layer of Classical Education when the question was asked, “Is your child a product to be measured, or a soul to be nurtured?” Exposing the fallacy of modern education gave freedom “To know God and to make Him known” through the remaining years of home education with her children. A passion for CC was ignited and the desire to help give other families this freedom continues to grow. Her husband playfully apologizes to people who ask her about home education knowing they are about to partake of a conversation that will test their purpose of education. Sandy is dedicated to building and strengthening communities in the Classical model knowing it will help equip and strengthen tomorrow’s Christian leaders to bring glory to God in every area of life. She and her husband, Dave, are the parents of five grown children who also see the value of Classical education talking about its significance in being a self-taught learner. They will graduate their fifth child in 2013 but know that education remains in their future as she pursues bringing CC to other families through serving as an Area Manager.
Always intrigued by various modes of classical education, Val was delighted to discover Classical Conversations in 2005. Since then, she has directed several Challenge levels, and has developed a heart for serving her CC communities in Virginia. Convinced that parents have the biblical responsibility to educate their children, Val and her husband, Bill, have enthusiastically homeschooled their four children for almost two decades. Wow. That’s a long time. Have no fear, the end is in sight. Her youngest daughter is nearing the end of her high school journey. Does that mean Val will stop? By no means! With her enduring zeal for classical home education, Val will continue to mentor parents and students alike as long as needed.
Val has a passion for growing CC in fulfillment of her multi-generational vision as she looks forward to the day when she has grandkids in the program.Val seeks to pass on the vision of CC by encouraging fellow directors and parents in their journey of home centered education. It is her greatest joy to see students growing in wisdom and love for the Lord Jesus Christ as they defend their faith.
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;“- I Peter 3:15
